The European Environment Agency (EEA) is an EU agency with the task to provide sound, independent information on the environment. Sweden has been a member of the EEA since 1994 and is represented in the EEA management board by the Swedish EPA.

Support for environmental knowledge in Europe

The EEA aims to achieve significant and measurable improvement in Europe's environment, by providing timely, targeted, relevant, and reliable information to policymakers and the public. The EEA has 32 member countries and six cooperating countries.

The EEA’s mandate is:

  • To help the EU community as well as member and cooperating countries make informed decisions about improving the environment, integrating environmental considerations into economic policies, and moving towards sustainability
  • To coordinate the European environment information and observation network.

The European environment information and observation network, Eionet

The European environment information and observation network, Eionet, is a partnership network of the EEA and its member and cooperating countries. Through Eionet, the EEA brings together environmental information from individual countries concentrating on the delivery of timely, nationally validated, high-quality data.

In Sweden 10 authorities and about 50 experts are involved in the cooperation within Eionet. These authorities are also often closely involved in tracking the progress of reaching the environmental goals.

The Swedish cooperation with EEA and Eionet is coordinated by the Swedish EPA as national focal point for EEA in Sweden.

EEA-Eionet Strategy

The EEA-Eionet Strategy for 2021-2030 gives the direction for EEA and Eionet in the coming decade. The joint task of EEA and Eionet is to give EU policymakers and the public the best available knowledge to reach the targets on environment and sustainability.

The European environment – state and outlook

The European environment – state and outlook is a comprehensive assessment of the European environment’s state, trends and prospects, in a global context. Published by the EEA every five years, the last assessment was presented in 2020.

The Swedish experts in Eionet take active part in the preparatory work for the assessment and support with environmental data and knowledge of the Swedish environment.
