CCAC - Working at the forefront to reduce short-lived climate pollutants

Last reviewed: ‎30‎ ‎September‎ ‎2024

Launched in 2012, the Climate and Clean Air Coalition, CCAC, supports partners and stakeholders in their work to reduce short-lived climate pollutants.

The CCAC is a voluntary partnership of governments, intergovernmental organisations, businesses, scientific institutions, and civil society organisations committed to improving air quality and protecting the climate through actions to reduce short-lived climate pollutants. Members of the initiative are Sweden, UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme), Bangladesh, Ghana, Canada, Mexico, and the United States. The Swedish EPA holds the role of Sweden’s national focal point.

Engaged in the CCAC waste hub

The Swedish EPA is particularly engaged in the CCAC waste hub leadership group. Due to dumping and landfill of organic waste, the waste sector has a huge impact on the amount of short-lived pollutants and in particular anthropogenic methane emissions.

In the CCAC waste hub, the Swedish EPA is continuously working to support overall waste management strategies of national and sub-national governments and municipalities with actions that focus on mitigation of methane and black carbon emissions. For example, by developing economic uses and facilities for treatment of organics, as well as preventing open burning of waste. Actions like these also have a positive influence on local environmental, economic and health aspects.

The Global Methane Pledge

Connected to the work of CCAC in catalysing rapid reductions in short-lived climate pollutants, Sweden is a proud supporter of the Global Methane Pledge that was formally launched in November 2021. The collective goal of the pledge is to reduce global methane emissions by at least 30 percent by 2030 compared to 2020, by taking voluntary actions on national levels. Ahead of COP 27 in November 2022, the Swedish EPA was appointed by the Swedish government to provide input in the development of Sweden’s methane action plan. The document is a foundation for further work on developing Sweden’s actions on methane.
