Working together to build mutual strength

Last reviewed: ‎30‎ ‎May‎ ‎2024

The EU Baltic Sea region counts 85 million inhabitants and eight countries. As all share challenges that cannot be solved by a single country alone, there is a clear need for joining forces and working in cooperation across borders.

Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Sweden work together in the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region, EUSBSR. The strategy is divided into three objectives which represent the key challenges in the region:

  • saving the sea
  • connecting the region
  • increasing prosperity.

At the European Commission, the work is directed by Directorate General for Regional and Urban Policy. In Sweden, work on the EU Baltic Sea Strategy is coordinated by the Prime Minister’s Office at the Government Offices of Sweden.

Several ministries are involved, including the Ministry of the Environment. All in all, about 40 Swedish public authorities are tasked to facilitate the implementation of the strategies’ objectives and goals.

How it works

The implementation of the strategy is carried out through a variety of activities by a multitude of different stakeholders. Example of activities are projects (single or grouped in clusters), processes, networks or platforms. Sometimes larger projects within the strategy are called Flagships or project to action platforms.

Stakeholders

The EU member states involved in the EUSBSR are Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Sweden. The EUSBSR implementation is coordinated in close contact with the European Commission and all relevant stakeholders, such as other member states, regional and local authorities, as well as inter-governmental and non-governmental bodies.
